Quarantine Feb 19, '63
Dear Brother Henry
It is with a great
deal of pleasure that I seat myself
to write you a few lines to inform
you how I get along I am not very
well now I have got the diarrhea and
a verry hard cough I suppose it is
the affects of the measles, but I
hope this will find you well &
enjoiing your self we are encamped
in the Quarantine grounds
we have been in camp 4 days
I like camp life first rate We do
our cooking now we are divided
into squads of 10 each we have
all we want to eat and have
a bulley time cooking it perhaps
you would like to know what we
have to eat we have pork, beef,
potatoes, beens, rice, hard tack
perhaps you dont know what they be
well I will try to tell you what
they be they look like a sody cracker
they are square and mad of floure
mixed with cold water no salt
nor shortening they are as hard as
___ and we have coffee, sugar,
molasses, salt, and vinegar. That is
all I believe we trad off what we
cant eat with the negroes for fish
oisters sweet potatoes and such stuff
it is real hot hear in the day time
and quite cool nights there is heavy
fogs hear everry night and the
mosquitoes are thicker than hair
on a dog and as large as bumblebees
some of them are ___ back and
some have stars on their forehead
and white at the end of their tails
some are black and some are ___
the blacksmiths keep them to drill
holes in iron (I guess so) how I wish
I had a fish line now for our camp
haint more than a rod from
the mississippi
wild geese are thick down hear but I haint
got any gun to shoot them with
alligators are thick the river is up
higher ground than the ground
on the side of it there is a bank
built up on each side of the river
so it wont overflow the land the
land is verr marshey all along the
river. the ground is ditched well but it
back he has been to the reg he run
away from hear and went to the reg
___ they sent him back with the
verry ___ about the same thing as the
smallpox any one can catch the
smallpox of him Dave says that
Capt Tucker is alive and fat as
a hog the boys are all in good health
up where they be ___ is well so that
he travels around outdoors he wants
to sea his daddy verry bad Dave says
the reg is expecting a fight everry day
B Co. was fired on the other night
by a gunboat
___ Co. of the 114th the rebs are right in ___
oh how I wish I could be up there there haint
but 1 place that I should like to be any
better and that is HOME. but I haint there
but I shall be sometime and if it is
gods will it wont be many long months
well what for a time did you have down
to the Donation when you write all
about it how does the ___ get along
have you got him broke yet dont you feel
ashamed when the Morgan gets up by
the side of him after you read this just
go out and get them up ___ and side
and see if the Morgan haint a little the
tallest I suppos you will be thinking about
making sugar when you get this I want
you to eat some for me and save me
a chunk Oh Dear brother how I would like
to see you but cant now I drempt about
being home last night and finally
I dream about being to home everry once
in a while but when I wake up I am in my
tent as usual I will send you a ring in this ___
I guess you can wear it it wont brake verry
easy you can have it to remember your poor
brother away down in the bush A SOLDIER-
ING only just think ___ in the bush two tree
___ and mile from home it is a big ways
to Lowzyanny haint it well I have wrote
about all I can think of this time
so I must close by saying good by for
