Quarantine March 12th
Dear Brother Henry
It is with much
pleasure that I take my pen in
hand to let you know how I
am getting along I am well and
enjoiing myself as well as I can
considering the place I am in.
but I hope this will find you well
and kicking. or making sugar and
that I expect you will be doing before
this will get to you. I am at Quarantine
yet and there haint much prospects
of getting away yet but we expect to
cross the river and pitch our tents
everry day. I have allmost given up
ever seeing my reg. again we have
been expecting to go everry day for
3 weeks and have got cheated out of
it now. but as long as I am away
from the reg. I shant have to fight
and that is one consolation the last
I heard from the 114th reg they was
expecting a heavy fight everry day.
but I should like the fun of shooting
3 or 4 of the darned rebs or some of
the secesh for they charge unmercifully
for everything they have to sell
and for everything that we want to
by. It is quite cool hear today there
is a cold raw north wind the weather
has been quite cool for 3 or 4 days
and I hope it will remain so for
when it is warm down hear
it is all killing hot. The folks are
busy at work planting their potatoes
and making their gardens we had a
mess of beet greans for dinner the other
day and we have had 2 or 3 messes
of lettuce and a mess of round turnips.
the oringe orchards hang full of oringes
and the tree hang full of ___.
there has some of the boys
had boiled cabbage. well it is 12 oclock
and I must go and get my dinner
I am going to have an oister stew
for I bought a mess of oisters this
morning oister ar cheap down hear
we can get a quart for 5 cents
I have had quite a number of good
messes. my money begins to run
low it has been over 4 months since
I have had any pay and will probably
be 2 or 4 months before I get any
more pay. but never mind that Uncle
Sam is good for it. well now I have
had my dinner I will try to finish
this letter for I feel some better
for I have got a full belly. I should like
to know what the reason is that
I dont get a letter from some of you
I have looked for one now for a good
while but I have to look in vain
but I hope I shant have to look much
longer before I get one for I begin to
want to hear from home again. tell
Ma I want her to make me a nice cake
of sugar and save it for me and you
must all eat some for me. and I
will eat each one of you an oring
Henry I wish that you could work it
some way so as to send me some fishline
and 2 or 3 hooks for there is a nice
place hear to fish for there is lots of
speckled trout. Oh say my whiskers
have got to be over 1/2 inch long they are as
red as the boys head I have got to have
them trimmed before long I shall have
a bully mustash when I get home.
has Pa got all of his seasoned wood drawed
how much wood has he had cut this
winter. Jud is well he wrote home
yesterday how is Dans folks or haint you
heard from them lately you see I am
rather inquisitive for I want to know
it all. well I have wrote about all that I can
think of this time so I will close
the Colonel of the 50th is going up to
Neworleans this afternoon and he is
going to carry the mail so if I get this
done he will carry it you must read
