Camp Dudley. March 20
Dear Father and Mother
It is with much
pleasure indeed that I once more
seat myself to let you know how
I get along I am not verry tough
but I hope these few lines will find
you all well and enjoiing good health
we have got away from Quarantine
but not a great way we are just
across the river on a camp that the
rebs was encamped on when the
war first broke out. It is getting to
be rather hot weather down hear I dont
beleive that I am going to stand the
heat verry well for the sun wilts me
pretty easy. there is a good many
sick and complaining among us
I am afraid that a good many of us
will wilt if the keep us down hear
2 months longer there was quite
an axcident happened hear night before
last there was one of the 50th Mass
reg. while fixing to go on guard
hit his gun some way so that it
went off and the charge hit a man
that was laying in his tent
the charge was 3 buckshot and a
ball it hit the man in the thigh
one buckshot came out and the rest
had to be dug out and yesterday the
Doctors cut his leg off and about
an hour after his leg was cut off
he died poor fellow he had to under
go everry thing and die at last. That
was an axcident in camp. I haint
heard from our reg. in over 2 weeks
I expect they have been in a battle
for they have been fighting now
for a week up to vixburg I wish
that I was with them. I think there
is some prospects of getting our pay
before a great while I hope so at
any rate. my clothes wear first rate
there haint a hole in any of them
except my coat and that I burnt
in. there is 2 holes in one of my
boots one in the leg and a small
one in the toe the other one is
whole my socks wear first rate.
we had a good mess of fresh fish
day before yesterday for dinner and
have got another good mess today
we trad our meat for them.
Is it a good year for making sugar
this year I wish that I was up there
to eat some with you. perhaps
you would like to know if I am
contented when I am well I am as
contented as a kitten but when
I dont feel well I get to thinking
of home and of daddy and nanny
but I am not homesick. no
not I. but there is some hear that
is homesick and some that is sick of
home such a hom as we have hear.
I should like to know what the reason
is that I dont get a letter from you
I haint had one yet I have allmost given
up ever getting another letter from you
but if you get mine it is better than as
though you dident get them I have written
once a week ever since I have been hear
Jud is well he has gone down to fort Jackson
today he wants to get home pretty bad.
well I must herry and finish this
letter for the mail is going out
pretty soon. have you heard anything
from Uncle George yet. how is
Uncle John getting along who is he
going to work for this summer. well
I have wrote about all that I can think
of this time so I must close. direct to
Neworleans, La. write as soon as
you get this write once a week if you
dont get a letter from me for it has
been near 2 months since I heard
from home. write a good long letter
and write all about things around
there. this from your ever affectionate
son Galutia H York to Zebulon
and Lucy York. good by for this
time. I would write a longer letter
but this is a back out of the
way place. give my best respects
to all my inquiring friends if I have
got any
