October 28, 1862
Baltimore Oct 28 1862
My dear Parents
it is much pleasure
that I seat myself once more pen in hand
to answer your most welcomed letter which I
received yesterday and you cannot imagine
how glad I was to hear from home once more
it came like a sunny spot in a cloudy day for
it rained about as hard as it wanted to and I
had not anything to do but think. I am well
as usual excepting a bad cold I am in my glory
now we are in good quarters now we are in
the City of Baltimore I hope this will find you
all well and enjoiing good health we are in the
west ware house hospital we are guarding it
now it is a bully good place we dont have
to go out doors for anything only to stand on guard
and that is only everry other day we have a table to eat
on good warm place to sleep and a good cot to sleep
on if we could have such a place all of the time no one
could get homesick I dont believe
Our company is div-
ided now part is to one place and part to another I was
afraid that the Capt would get Dan and Uncle Steve
in one place and me to another but he did not
we are all together the Capt is with us he is a good
fellow Amasa Rite is sick he is our piper he came
from Clarkville he is nineteen years old he is that
mans son that was carpentering over to Allens
when we went up there to see Sidney I am proud
to say that I have not got the il will of any one
of the boys in the regiment that I know of
I just went to blow my nose and while I was gone
George Hays filled my bottle with ink he is a
____ fellow if I had of took him some other time
he would not have lent nor sold me any.
I have final come off of guard and I will try to write
a little more. I have soap to wash with but I have
not had any hot water but I guess I can get some
now down hear we are not to the West ware house
we are at the Medical purveyors we calculated to
go to the ware house but was changed Uncle Steve
talked some of enlisting in the navy I dont
kno whether he will or not there is a good many ___
I want you to send me
some mittens I have got to go on dress parade now
29th I will now try to finish my letter now
I should have finished it last night but after
we got back from dress parade I had to eat
my super and go on guard I would like
to have you send me some eggs if you could send
them without their ___ tell Adelbert
I would like to have one of his ___ roosters
all stuffed and roasted if it would come
before it ___ no dont send me a pillow for
I could not carry it when we march I can get
along without one well enough I would like the
suppers first rate but I dont know how I can
get them yes I have some aples to eat but I have
to pay 1 and ___ cents a peice for them aples is rather
scarce down hear yes the officers eat and camp with
with the soldiers what they have different they have
to by with their own money and the privates have
the same privilage yes you sent money enough
to last until we get our pay we get it next friday
my time commenced when I enlisted what do you
think about my enlisting into the navy if I should
enlist I would get about 100 dollars bounty
and 40 days furlo right off and 40 days furlo everry
year if I should enlis for the same time I have
now Pa what do you get a cord for your wood I
dont ___ out what pigs is as good as ____
calves how much butter did you have I should like
to be there to help eat up that cow and perhaps I
shall I want you to dry a good lot for I know ma take
a notion to want some I should like to be up there
and help you do your work but I cant now I
could read your writing you must write me again
I have wrote about all that I can think of this time so
I must close you must write as soon as you get this
