September 20, 1862
Camp Belger Sept 20th
Dear Parents
it is with great pleasure
that I set down
to answer your most
welcomed letter of the
14th I am well and hope
this will find you better
I was verry sorry to hear
that Irene was so sick
but I hope and pray this
will find her better tell
her I freely forgive her
for all that she everr done
to me tell her that I would
like to see her once more
and I hope that I can
allowed to see her a good
many times yet so
good by no I dont
wonder at your feeling
bad when you heard
that we was all taken
prisoner although
if we had of been we
should have been home
before this time Them
roots that you dug I did
not use many of them
for I got along without
it but I have got them
yet I washed my
socks once and darned
them I hired my shirt
and drawers washed
and had to pay 10
cts I can go in a swing
when I want to yes I
have red in my bible
some I read 1 chapter everry
day I have not got another
fine comb yet I found
a pair of brass combs the
other day that was ____
fine? so I use them
in the room of a fine

he had not better enlist
for we are going to lick
the rebbels without any
of his assistance I should
think that you did have
a lingering time a picking

we live we have potatoes
twice a day wheat bread 3
times a day beef twice
a day pork and beans once
a day rice and molasses
once a day or if they dont
have rice we have mahominy
and sugar some cheese
and coffee twice a day
and that is enough
for any body I begin
to grow fat some of the
boys say Daniel is
well he had a letter
from Abey last night
Uncle Stephen has
been sick he is better
now he had a letter
from ___ ___ last
night Aunt ___
___ ____ some in it
she said you was all
well Captain Tucker
is pretty sick there is
quite a number sick
in this regiment one
man in company A
is dead and there is one
of the Leutenants
that cannot live you
had better believe that
I was tickled when I
got your letter last
night I laughed
out of the other corner of
my mouth when I read
it but I hope Irene is
not as sick as you thought
she was I want you
to write as soon as
you get this and dont
neglect it for I want to
hear how you all are
I should like to see you
all a few minutes but
I cannot now but

flying in every direction
I have rote a letter to Eugene
and one to Henry Coon
one to ___
___ and one to Alonzo
and two to you as this
makes two I have wrote all
I can think of this time so I
must bid you all good by
direct to the same as
before this from your

I have got to put
a paper on over my letter
for the rapper is so thin
that the writing shows
through it they are the best
that I have had a chance
to get I sent that
picture with some
that Uncle Stephen sent
home it will be there
to ___ you will
have to inquire if
there is a picture
there for ___ ___
if you have not got
it dan feels a little
better today there
was a man killed
over in a camp about
20 rods from our
2 or 3 nights ago
he tried to run the
guard and the guard
run the bayonet
through his boddy
it passed through
his heart does the
morgan grow any
do you know whether
henry coon got that
letter that I sent
to him the reason of
my writing with a pencil
is that I can write
it is just as convenient
to write with a
pen give my best
respects to all
of my inquiring
friends if I have
any
