Royson N. Whipple, the fourth president of the
institution now called the
State University of New York at Morrisville, was born in
Buffalo, New York in 1912. He earned a bachelor's degree from
the University of Michigan and a master's degree from
Cornell University. After serving as head of the Food
Technology Department for 12 years, Mr. Whipple became director of
the college in 1957. In 10 years, under his leadership,
the enrollment of the college tripled, staff size experienced
dramatic growth and the largest construction activity in
the college's history, including the Norwich Campus, took place.
