            OBITUARY.
         Simeon N. Caryl.
Simeon Nathaniel Caryl, father of Russel
and Silas Caryl of this village, died
suddenly at his home in Oregon, Lapeer
county, aged 79 years, on Monday, July 1,
1905, of a paralytic stroke.
Mr. Caryl was born in New York state in
1826, and came to Michigan in 1872, and
settled on the farm in Oregon township
upon which he died, having married Miss
Betsey Babbitt in January, 1854.
Mr. Caryl was the father of 13 children,
12 of whom eight boys and four girls,
with his wife survive him. He was also
garndfather to 36 children and great-
grandfather to four, and, as his children
say, "was a father among fathers"--always
loved and cherished in his family, and
highly esteemed among his neighbors and
friends.
Mr. Caryl was a veteran of the Mexican
and civil wars, during the former, serving
as gunner in the U.S. navy, at the end of
which he was promoted to the position of
chief gunner of his vessel. During the
civil war Mr. Caryl served as a gunner in
the 181st New York artillery, and, in
company with Edward Austin, father of our
drayman, who was a teamster, distinguished
himself in the recapture of their squad of
12 guns at Vicksburg, after they had been
captured by the rebels.
The funeral was held at the German church
in Oregon, the Baptist minister from
Columbiaville officiating, and the remains
laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining.
Leo Groves, in the absence of his father,
very creditably conducted the funeral.
