The County History calls this a "phantom post" discussed during
1874 and 1888 but never an organized group.
# 77 - Wellsburg - Post disbanded 1877.
Sergaent George C. Bingham, Co. C, 161st NYSV. Part of the
"Forlorn Hope" at Port Hudson, LA; shot through the heart
and killed instantly 5/27/63. Surviving members voted to
disband the post 6/27/18 and its papers were donated to
the NYS Library.
# 165 - Elmira - 12/14/82 to 1922.
2d Lt. Lewis Edgar Fitch, Co. C, 161st NYSV. Joined 8/62 at
Elmira as Sgt., age 20; WIA 7/13/63 at Cox Plantation, LA;
promoted to 1st Sgt. 12/63, to 2d Lt. 3/64; KIA at Sabine
Crossroads, LA 4/8/64. The Fitch Post membership peaked
at around 100 during 1892 and apparently disbanded during
1925.
# 416 - Millport - 11/9/83 to 1920.
Private Wilson Dean , Co. A, 89th NYSV. Enlisted 1864 at
Catherine, age 27; captured at Cold Harbor, VA; died at
Andersonville. Last 3 members of Dean Post voted to
disband 6/20/20; last survivor was Jerome Kendall of
Millport who died in 1939.
# 430 - Erin - Chartered 1/1/84.
Brevet Brigadier General William M. Gregg. Born in 1820 in Elmira;
NY harnessmaker, railway mail agent, politician; joined 23d NYSV
at Elmira 5/61 as 1st Lt., age 39; promoted to Major May 1861;
discharged with regiment 5/63; promoted to Colonel, 179th NYSV,
9/64; WIA 4/2/65 near Appomattox, VA; died 9/2/81; buried in
Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.
# 454 - Van Etten - 3/3/84 to 1914.
Private Edward Maxwell, Battery M, 3d NY Light Artillery. Mustered
10/21/61; KIA at Petersburg, VA. The Maxwell Post was among the
sponsors of an annual reunion of CW soldiers and sailors from
Chemung, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins Counties. The 1905 reunion
drew four thousand veterans and family members.
# 554 - Big Flats - Chartered 4/25/85.
2d Lt. William A. Seeley, 24th NY Cavalry. Joined 3d NYSV
at Havana as Private, Co. K, age 23; discharged with rank of
1st Sgt. 5/63; joined 24th Cavalry at Orange, NY, 1/64 as
Private, Co. K; wounded 6/18/64 at Petersburg, VA; captured
10/1/64 at Poplar Springs, VA; paroled 2/17/65; commissioned
as 2d Lt., Co. H from 1864; transferred to Co. C, 1st NY
Provisional Cavalry 6/65; discharged with regiment 7/65.
Was a resident of Big Flats, a town that had 170 men join
the Federal forces. Seeley Post also drew members from nearby
Horseheads.
# 555 - Weelsburg - 5/4/85 to 1918.
Sgt. George C. Bingham, Co. C, 161st NYSV. See Post #77.
# 606 - Elmira - Chartered 2/18/87.
Brevet Brigadier General Henry C. Hoffman.
Born in 1827 in Chemung
County; a dairy farmer in Horseheads; joined the 23d NYSV
at Elmira 5/61 as Colonel, age 33; discharged with regiment 5/63;
served in the State Assembly 1866 and 1880; committed suicide
8/26/83; buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.
# 623 - Elmira - Chartered 8/10/97.
Brevet Brigadier General Alexander Samuel Diven. Born in 1809 in
Watkins, NY; lawyer and railroad executive; Colonel 107th NYSV;
Provost Marshal General for western NY; died in 1896 in Elmira;
buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Diven Post enrolled 380 members
during its 29 years of activity, disbanding 4/1/26.
# 650 - Elmira - Chartered 8/26/91.
Captain Louis Alexander Hazard, Co. K, 141st NYSV. Joined 8/62
at Elmira as Private, age 22; promoted to Sgt. Major 9/62, to
1st Lt. and Adjutant 5/63; WIA at Peach Tree Creek; discharged
for disability 12/64; brevet Major NY Volunteers; Elmira
newspaperman after the war. Hazard Post disbanded circa 1909.
# 672 - Elmira - 5/15/15 to 1922.
Captain Robert M. McDowell, Co. I, 141st NYSV. Joined 11/62 at
Washington, DC, as 1st Lt./Adjutant; promoted to Captain 4/63;
discharged with regiment 6/65; brevet Major US Volunteers.
Records indicate that McDowell Post was organized during 1895.
