Brownell W. Lee.
Following an illness of several
months, Brownell W. Lee, a veteran
of the Cival War and member of
Hamilton-Sleight Post, G.A.R.,
died at his home, 40 Virginia Ave-
nue, Poughkeepsie, Tuesday. Mr.
Lee was seventy-four years old and
was a native of Poughkeepsie. He
was widely known and highly re-
spected. Mr. Lee leaves nine chil-
dren. The funeral was held from
Mr. Lee's late home Friday after-
noon at half-past two o'clock. Rev.
S. Wright Butler officiated.
Mr. Lee was the last of the men
from this section to survive the hor-
rors of Libby Prison. When eight-
een years old he enlisted in the
Union Army in New York. That was
at the outbreak of the war in 1861.
He was later assigned to Company
H, 61st Regiment. He was wound-
ed at Malvern Hill in the following
year and a few months later was
discharged from the service because
of his wounds. He returned to
New York and re-enlisted in Com-
pany F, New York Cavalry. He
served during the war and was hon-
orably discharged. The bullet which
he received at Malvern Hill he car-
ried to his grave. Mr. Lee was a
patriotic American in every sense
and his passing is regretted by all
who knew him.
