Judge Phineas Catlin. Though Corporal Phineas H. Catlin, Co. B, 194th NYSV
joined this post, it was not named for him (he died after 1900). "Judge"
Phineas Catlin was very prominent in the community and it is thought that he is
the post's namesake. He enlisted at age 16 and was a Sgt. of Dragoons in Col.
Elisha Sheldon's Continental regiment from 1778 to war's end. His father
Theodore was also a soldier in that war and Phineas Catlin Jr. was a War of
1812 veteran. The Judge took up a soldier's warrant three miles from Montour
Falls during 1792.
- # 423 - Valois - Nov. 19, 1883 to 1923.
Mr. Daniel B. Smith. Not a Civil War soldier but proprietor of a tavern who
admired the GAR greatly. He asked the local vets to establish a post and
organizational meetings were held at his tavern.

Sgt. Major Philip L. Beach, 161st NYSV. Joined as a Corporal in Co. D at Bath
in Aug., 1862, age 26; promoted to Sgt. Major Oct. 27, 1862; died of
consumption at home April 13, 1863.
- # 515 - Watkins - Chartered Sept. 16, 1884.
Captain Daniel W. Washburn, Co. A, 4th NY Heavy Artillery. Joined Set. 1864 at
Petersburg, VA as 2d Lt., age 22; 1st Lt Feb. 1865; detailed as adjutant;
Captain May 31, 1865; discharged to date Sept. 26, 1865; brevet Major USV for
gallantry April 6, 1865; accidently killed on a Texas railroad which he, as a
civil engineer, was building.
