Petersburg June 15, 1864; promoted to 2d Lt. Oct., 1864; to 1st Lt. Feb., 1865;
discharged with regiment June, 1865.

Major John Barnet Sloan, 179th NYSV. Joined 31st NYSV May, 1861 at NYC as 1st
Lt., age 23; stabbed one mutineer soldier of the 31st with his sword after he
was attacked, shot another a few days later - subsequent court-martial cleared
him; General McClellan reportedly followed the court-martial and influenced
Sloan's promotion; promoted to Captain Jan. 23, 1862; WIA May 3, 1863 at
Fredericksburg; promoted to Major May 9, 1863; mustered out with regiment June
4, 1863; mustered as Major 179th NYSV, May 26, 1864; KIA June 17, 1864 at
Petersburg; buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Penn Yan.
